About our site

What is an accessible Web site?

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines have been defined by the World Wide Web consortium (W3C), to ensure that web access is available to all users. Web sites should cater for those using a screen reader that speaks the text, a braille reader, those browsing without using a mouse, those with low vision or colour deficits, or those using a mainstream browser. The standards of compliance range from Level A (minimum) to Level AAA (full).

Accessibility – Our site.

This site was created using HTML 4.01 and cascading style sheets to control formatting, in line with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. The appearance may vary on different browsers. The site will also display correctly in text-based browsers or using screen readers.

There are some special features for screenreaders. The first item of each menu is a link, which allows the user to skip to the next menu, or to the page content. These links are hidden from graphical browsers. Some additional punctuation had also been inserted to allow screenreaders to speak items with logical pauses.

We are constantly reviewing, evaluating and upgrading our site. We welcome comment and suggestions. Please send comments to QDN.

Browsers: The site will display best using a style sheets-capable browser e.g. Netscape Navigator 4 or Internet Explorer 5 and above, at a minimum resolution of 800 x 600, but will display all information on most browsers.

Tip: To alter the screen font size, in Internet Explorer 6 / Netscape 6, from the top menu, press View / Text Size and select one of the available sizes. In Netscape, you may also press Ctrl and +/- keys; in Internet Explorer, hold down the Ctrl key and use the mouse scroll wheel.

Tip: The site provides navigation for users who prefer to use a keyboard for navigation. In Internet Explorer, you can use shortcut keys (Alt + underlined letter in menu bar). The Tab key also should take you to most links in menus, pages and forms.

Site Documents.

QDN endeavours to produce documentation in formats that are accessible to the widest audience. Generally, MS Word documents in plain text achieve that goal. When documents have complex formats, QDN generally displays them both in ‘as is’ format and plain text. However, we receive information in various formats such as web pages, as MS Word documents and in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. While we endeavour to source plain text versions, often this is not possible.

To view PDF documents, you will need Adobe Reader installed on your computer.
