QDN is part of a project called the Disability Support Organisation (DSO) Capacity Building Project.
A Disability Support Organisation (DSO) supports people with disability connect with peers, support each other to grow and learn, and be a collective voice to help people move towards the life they want.
All governments across Australia are committed to a unified, national approach to supporting people with disability maximise their potential and participate as equal citizens in Australian society.
One part of this national approach includes the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) which is being rolled out across Queensland (and Australia) from 1 July 2016 to 2019. It will provide support to people with disability and their families to be part of the social and economic life of their community.
A DSO can help people get information, link people together to share their lived experience and stories. It can also support people with disability to make decisions around their future life goals and plans, and the ways people with disability participate and are part of the social and economic life of their community.
A DSO’s main job is to help people living with disability to start or join a local peer support network or group.
There are many disability organisations that already help people to join peer support networks, and a DSO does not replace this. DSOs will help increase the numbers of peer support networks, so more people can be involved.
A DSO is not a disability service provider. It does not provide disability services like day programs, therapy or support workers to help with daily living.
QDN is the DSO supporting this work in Queensland. We are one of 18 across Australia, and we are funded by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to do this work in 2015 and 2016.
QDN will be working with Local Support Groups of people with disability in different locations and online communities throughout Queensland.
Our role includes:
We know there are already existing peer groups of people with disability doing great work together in Queensland. We want to work with and support existing groups where we can.
We want to work with them, and existing organisations doing similar work to support and connect people with disability to get ready for the NDIS. If you are a member of an organisation or peer group in Queensland, please get in touch.
Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN) is an organisation of people with disability for people with disability.
We encourage and support ways for you to have a say – and be heard.
We aim to connect you with information about the things that matter to you, and support you coming together with others, through our network of members.
